Cat’s Final Designs: MoMo Cowls

Cat designed this hat for her dear friend, Deb. Many of you know her as the talented caterer at Cat’s retreats. Deb brought me the hats and claims it is easily her favorite and she wears it all Fall and Winter.
Truth be told, we all need to wear a crown sometimes, right? Perhaps it is a birthday, a victory at work, getting a grandchild to nap or a pick-me-up for a friend who needs it.
Of course, Cat made three different variations, but the first one has a fun little story and I reached out to her knitters to see if we could capture it and thanks to Maureen, now we know!

FROM MAUREEN:
I’m pretty sure every one of Cat’s San Juan Island retreats were magic. April 2013 was the first retreat of the year at Lakedale. It dared to rain as the “the kindness of knitters” (as Cat called us) gathered from all over the country. We came to de-stress, learn, share and experiment while working on felfs, phone pouches and tea cozies. There was also a visit from the local fox, an Island Fibers popup shop, quiet times, lots of laughter and stories from Cat and Jim P, wine, and even some sunshine. But everyone was always happy to drop everything when Deb Nolan served her fabulous meals. The Catering Queen needed a crown! Cat started the hat. The attendees were invited to add a couple of rows.

Vicky’s Tips: Trust the pattern! Your decreases will be at the top of the point of the crown on the band. That is your starting point.

Beth’s Tips: Size 7 needles, with 5 peaks. Just the right amount of yarn, with 19 grams left. Rios was lovely and soft, but maybe TOO soft for the desired effect.
I re-knit with Cascade 220 and size 5 needles, got a 36 row repeat of 3 inches high and 3.25 wide, and 6 peaks. The fabric was a little stiffer, and I like the look of the additional peak on the crown.

Andrea’s Tips: I ended up with 5 peaks knitting to gauge. But, next one I knit I want more than 5 peaks.
Fortunately this is an easy pattern to customize. I will either do shorter peaks or drop down a needle size.

Colette’s Tips: I used stitch markers to identify where increases were on the crown – helped a lot!

Sharon’s Tips: I love how intuitive and flexible the pattern is! It makes matching head size & circumference very easy. The band’s peaks benefit from structure, and the bind-off method is perfect for adding stability. Better to be a little under gauge and add a peak than to stretch the band.

Anna’s Tips: For the cap I would add using stitch markers on Round 4 at each of the 7 places increases are to bedone. Then after the 15-20% more than your band count I would add that you can remove the stitch markers. Otherwise the pattern is easy to follow.

Laura’s Tips: I used 2 circular needles to begin the cap part of the hat & switched to 1 16” circular needle when I had increased enough for the stitches to fit comfortably on the needle.
My gauge was 18st/inch for the garter & the stockinette. I made this test knit hat to fitXL head, 25” or larger, & extra deep to cover ears, because I wanted to see it 1skein of Rios would suffice. Answer: YES! 210yd skein of Rios had 31yds remaining.
This XL hat used 179yds. No yarn chicken… no stress. Be assured that 1skein will suffice for any size.

Mandie’s Tips: Gauge measures 20 st/4″ in both garter stitch & stockinette-in-the-round. Needle size adjusted to match gauge. A chunkier yarn (Malabrigo Mecha or Chunky) will produce a heavier fabric with a band that can support itself when folded down.

Lindsey’s Tips: After increases on the cap part of the pattern I knit without decreasing until the last 8 rows of the cap. I made it deeper to cover my ears as I’m in MN.

Diane’s Tips: If you don’t like the groove hat the JMCO gives with the 3 needle bind off, consider a crocheted provisional cast on with waste yarn. When finished with the band, remove the waste yarn, and put the live stitches on a needle, then the 3 needle bind off.

Ellen’s Tips: Use stitch markers to keep track of the increases/decreases. The combination of gauge and yarn produces a floppy hat.

Linda’s Tips: Regarding the chart, in my experience with many other charts, the odd # rows were on the right and even # on the left. Just put a marker on the right side of the band and knit every row to create the Garter Stitch band.
According to my head measurement, my hat needed 5 peaks X 18 = 90. So, on the stockinette cap portion, I increased to 105 for the recommended ease. Then, I decreased to 90 to match band count. My finished depth is 7″ which seems in balance with the 3 1/2″ peaks.
Prerequisite skills include the use of Magic Loop and Judy’s Magic Cast On. The Three Needle Bind Off combined with Jeny’s Super Stretchy Bind Off creates a beautiful edge which I will utilize on other projects. Instruction on each of these techniques is easily found on YouTube. This pattern was a joy to knit!

Margie’s Tips: I went down from 4.5 mm needle to 4 mm needle for the band to make it a bit more sturdy and allow it to fold over into a vizor.
