The Zen Garden Capelet is the first Community Pattern to emerge from Cat’s legacy, pieced together from material developed by Cat herself, and only discovered since Cat’s passing. This beautiful group effort was knit together by Cat’s glorious community all over the world.
Some of the features within this capelet will require your blind trust, as is true with many of Cat’s patterns. In the test knitter group, it was common to hear, “What? How? Ohhhhhh! That’s so Cat!” Once you allow yourself to fall into the calming garter stitch rows, you will know exactly where this capelet derived its name from. If you have knit up a pair of Cat’s Zen Garden Fingerless Mitts, you will quickly find your rhythm. Enjoy!

Tips: For a dressy version of this, I’m considering a cushy dove grey cashmere for the cream and a thin mohair silk in charcoal for the green.

Comments: I have future plans for the DK Sueno, perhaps with a strand of fingering mohair as was suggested by another test knitter.

Tips: This pattern is easily customizable. I added 1 wedge to each side so the capelet would fit me better. After completing the 3 needle bind off, I was able to easily do a Kitchener stitch on top of the fisherman’s rib areas to hide the seam!

Tips: I found it helpful to mark the right side of my knitting to keep track of the pattern on the odd rows vs knit across on the even rows, even then I would sometimes still knit across when I should have been doing the pattern. I was glad I slipped the first st of each row to make a nice finished edge. I used a spare cable to hold the unused stitches at the beginning after the cast on. I think it worked better than having a long cable to hold them which I thought would get tiring as the knitted rows grew.

Yarn Used: HiKoo Sueño, 1 skein of mountain fog, 1 skein of bashful, 1 skein of plum and 1 skein of slated. Each skein is 255 yards.
Tips: 1. I followed the original pattern except for 1. 2 decrease wedges and 2 increase wedges.
2. The very end where I completed last wedge and cast off using 3 needle bind off, didn’t do the unique wrong side row.
3. I cast on 120 stitches, adding an extra 20 stitches because I wanted it longer and wider, adding an extra w&t to each wedge making it wider. At the end, I completed the last wedge, then repeated row 1, then the unique WS row before 3 needle bind off. 6-1-3-1-6 wedges.
4. I made a second one with Caron Simply Soft from my stash, unsure of quantities, used 10 colors.

Tips: There are 3 basic wedges between my right and left decreases — mostly because I lost count while knitting. Turns out I’m really happy with how it hangs as a result, though to be honest, I don’t know that a 4th one would affect that much. Beyond 4 and I think it would start affecting the length at the elbow/side.

Tips: I broadened the neck to 22”, reduced the neck/collar height by 2 stitches and added 3 or 4 stitches to the shoulder width. Also reduced the skirt and hem length by 2 stitches each. Shortening the length by an inch. My gauge was a bit large and so I achieved the neck and shoulder girth size I needed with 19 wedges.

Tips: DO NOT change yarn in the ribbed sections. Change at beginning or end of row, or in the garter stitch sections. If you want a wider bottom, but the same size neck; add an additional short row set to each repeat in the wedge, but working the w&t at marker A. For a longer capelet, add additional stitches in the garter sections.

Tips: Be playful! The options of orchestrating colors and motif combinations are endless. I developed a short-hand version of the pattern which helped me know where I was as I progressed, considering that all the even rows were simply Knit rows: 1 FULL 3 C 5 B 7 FULL 9 C 11 B 13 FULL 15 C 17 B 19 FULL 21 C 23 B 25 FULL For the child’s size – I cast on 52 stitches; 17, 12, 12, 11 and knit 14 wedges.
